The civil war situation in Sri Lanka is deteriorating without getting coverage in the Western media. The last United Nations aid team left the war zone in Northern Sri Lanka for army-held territory on September 17. The war between the military and the Liberation Tigers of Tamil Eelam (LTTE) rebels has intensified with the military attacking the rebel stronghold of Kilinochchi in the north. The rebels have been fighting for a separate homeland for the Tamil minority since 1983.
Nicholas D. Kirstoff writes that the government has ordered Tamils out of Colombo and other Sinhala majority areas, causing a displacement of 70,000 people.
